Tennis String Selection Step 1

This section of the string guide from Racquet Technic describes the first stage in helping you to select a tennis string.

The following factors are involved in selecting a string. You must decide which of the factors is important to you.

You should then go to Step Two which explains the different string gauges.

Selection Hints

You should try to compare each of these factors to the string that is currently in your racket.

The colour of the strings should not influence the performance. It is simply a matter of personal preference

String Selection Step 1: Factors explained

Performance

This is the response that you feel from the strings when you play a shot. It depends on the materials used in the string and type of construction. The gauge of a string also influences the performance of a string.

Durability

How long do your strings last? This could be a few days or several months. You will need to select a string that matches the requirements of your style of game. A player who breaks strings normally needs a string made from one of the more durable materials.

String Price

This is obviously how much the string costs. The overall cost depends on how long the string lasts. There are players who need only one restring per year and others break their strings after a few days play. This life of the string will influence the price you are willing to pay.

String Brands

There are lots of different string brands. Most of the racket companies recommend you to use their strings. There are also independent companies who specialise in the production of strings. Some players have favourite brands, and others are willing to try alternatives.
